A cooked pantry can be useful
Choose a Costa Rican cook's recipe and read its details. Note whether the beans are black or red, how much broth stays with them, and which sauce is specified. Neighboring cuisines have related preparations and their own names and histories; do not assume every rice-and-bean dish is the same.

Keep the bean broth under control
A recipe that uses bean cooking liquid is working with flavor and moisture together. Drain or reserve it as directed. If using canned beans, check the suggested adaptation before adding the liquid from the can, which may be salted and have a different consistency.
Cook the rice to the recipe's starting texture. A pan of already wet, overcooked rice cannot be expected to become a neat, separate mixture simply by frying it. Fluff cooked rice and handle it safely if making it ahead; the overnight rest is not a reason to leave it on the counter.
Let aromatics cook before the final mixture
Prepare onions, peppers, herbs, and any other aromatics before turning on the stove. Read which go in early and which finish the dish. A tough piece of raw onion is an avoidable interruption in a bowl whose rice and beans are already cooked.
Add the seasoning sauce in the recipe's quantity, then taste. Different bottled products may have different salt levels. Keep a note of the product you used and any substitution. It will help you understand why the next batch tastes different even when the beans and rice are unchanged.
Make the breakfast plan complete
If serving eggs or another hot accompaniment, plan the order so the mixture does not wait while everything else begins. Put plates and any cold accompaniments out first. A straightforward meal is easier when the small tasks happen before the hot pan needs attention.
Store leftover components in labeled portions so they can become another meal without repeated warming and cooling. Use a reliable cooling and reheating routine. The convenience of ready beans and rice is strongest when the next portion is both easy to find and safe to serve.

Cooked rice and beans need prompt refrigeration; keep the original cooking date on the container.
