Match the chimney to the fire
Think about the actual fire you build. A small portable grill does not always need the fuel load of a larger kettle. Conversely, using a compact chimney for a large fire may mean lighting another batch.
Dimensions include more than the tube
Weber lists overall dimensions of 12.5 by 8.1 by 12.7 inches for the standard model and 8 by 5.8 by 10.4 inches for the compact. Those dimensions include the projecting parts of the starter. Check the cupboard or transport space as a whole, rather than comparing height alone.
The standard model has a side handle and a flip-up helper handle for two-handed control while pouring. A filled chimney changes weight as the fuel burns. Inspect the grips and follow the brand's operating instructions, especially when transferring a load of glowing coals.
Treat the starter as hot equipment
Use a chimney only in an appropriate outdoor setting with the grill's safety instructions. Charcoal produces carbon monoxide, so it does not belong in an enclosed room, garage or tent. Keep the hot starter on a suitable noncombustible surface, well away from children and people passing by.
Use heat-resistant gloves and keep your face and exposed skin away from the rising heat. A heat shield reduces heat transfer; it is not permission to handle hot equipment carelessly. Plan where the empty chimney will stand before you pour the coals, because it stays hot afterward.
Our buying judgment
Choose the standard Rapidfire when your normal grill session needs a larger charcoal load and you have room to store it. Choose the Compact for smaller portable grills and a smaller fuel requirement. Match the chimney size to your grill and the charcoal load it needs.
Check the model number on the retailer page. A picture can make these two starters look more alike in size than they are. Buy only the capacity you need, and keep a suitable fire starter and gloves available. A chimney itself does not remove the need to manage a live outdoor fire safely.

Never light charcoal indoors or in an enclosed shelter. Follow the grill and chimney instructions.
