Choose the routine first
Neither routine measures the grounds by weight. If the exact dose matters to your recipe, weigh it. A timer can repeat a duration, but bean type and grind adjustment can change how much coffee that duration produces. The convenient control is the one that matches how you make breakfast.
Read settings as a map, not a score
The Encore manual describes 40 grind settings. OXO lists 15 numbered settings with additional microsettings. These counts describe the adjustment interface. They do not tell us the distribution of fine particles or whether two grinders produce equivalent grounds at a particular dial number.
Treat the manual's suggested starting point as a starting point. Brew a cup, change one variable and keep a note of the result. Settings do not transfer directly between brands, and even the same model can require a different position for a different coffee or brewing recipe.
Check which Encore you are buying
This comparison covers the original Encore ZCG485BLK, not the Encore ESP or ESP Pro. Baratza positions the original Encore around filter brewing. Do not assume that an article about another Encore variant establishes the capabilities of this model for a demanding espresso setup.
The linked OXO is the full-size silver 8717000 grinder, with a 12-ounce bean hopper. It is different from OXO's Compact grinder and its model with an integrated scale. Similar brand names are an easy way to buy a different control system from the one described here.
Our buying judgment
Shortlist the Encore for manual pulse control and a clearly numbered adjustment range. Shortlist OXO for the stored timer setting and one-touch start. These are interface judgments based on documentation.
Look up cleaning access and replacement support before purchase, especially if the grinder will be used daily. Follow the manufacturer's rules when adjusting the grind and cleaning the burrs. The useful purchase is one you can operate and maintain consistently, not simply the one with the larger settings count.
Keep in mind
Compare published product specifications, care instructions, and the features that matter for your cooking.
Check the intended brew methods and adjustment range before choosing a grinder.
