A compact Y peeler and attentive hand care

Kuhn Rikon Original Swiss Peeler, Black. The selected 2775 uses carbon steel and measures 4.25 inches long.

An inline peeler with dishwasher compatibility

OXO Good Grips Swivel Peeler. The 20081 has a stainless swivel blade and is dishwasher safe.

Begin with the shape your hand expects

The Kuhn Rikon Original Swiss Peeler and OXO Good Grips Swivel Peeler can both remove vegetable skins, but the hand positions differ. The selected Kuhn Rikon has a compact Y shape. The selected OXO places its swiveling blade in line with a longer handle. A familiar peeling movement is a useful starting point.

Kuhn Rikon identifies the black version as 2775 and says it suits either hand. OXO identifies its Good Grips swivel model as 20081, with a soft non-slip handle. Their different shapes make handle length and grip position more meaningful comparisons than a general assertion that either brand is more comfortable for everyone.

Blade material changes the cleanup habit

Kuhn Rikon uses carbon steel and specifically says to dry the blade thoroughly after washing. Hand washing is recommended. This is a good fit only if you will give the small tool that attention after prep. Leaving it wet among a pile of utensils defeats the care routine that accompanies the purchase.

OXO specifies a Japanese stainless steel blade and dishwasher compatibility. That makes it easier to include in a dishwasher-based kitchen routine. Stainless construction still needs ordinary cleaning around the blade opening. A convenient care label does not demonstrate that dried vegetable peel will fall away without rinsing or that an edge stays sharp indefinitely.

Peel the produce, then handle the blemishes

Both selected peelers include a potato eye remover. That is useful for taking out a small blemish without using the peeling blade for an awkward digging motion. Inspect the produce as you work and use a knife when a larger area needs trimming.

For long carrots, apples and potatoes, think about where the produce rests and which direction the stroke travels. Keep fingers away from that path. A peeler that feels fine on one round apple may need a different grip for a narrow carrot.

Choose a routine you will keep

Choose Kuhn Rikon if a compact Y peeler suits your technique and you will wash and dry its carbon steel blade promptly. Choose OXO if you prefer an inline swivel head and need documented dishwasher compatibility. Match the peeler shape and care routine to your preparation habits.

Storage is easy to overlook on a small purchase. The Kuhn Rikon is listed at 4.25 inches long, while the OXO is seven inches long and includes a hanging hole. Check the compartment where it will live and avoid placing an uncovered edge where a hand must rummage past it to reach another tool.
